Why is sleep so important for cleaning our brain?
Michaela Altenberger,
Sleep is not only important for our recovery, immune system, and general regeneration, but also for brain health. During sleep, a special system is activated that removes harmful substances and waste products from the brain. Researchers led by Maiken Nedergaard at the University of Rochester Medical Center discovered that there is a sort of "waste disposal system" for the brain.
How does the "brain cleaning" work?
- More Space Between Cells: During sleep, the spaces between the nerve cells expand, allowing cerebrospinal fluid to flow more easily.
- Waves of Flushing: The fluid moves in waves through the brain, flushing out waste products.
- Effective Disposal: Harmful substances are broken down twice as quickly during sleep as when awake.
Why deep sleep is so important
In deep sleep, the cleaning system works especially efficiently. The deeper the sleep, the better the brain is cleaned.
Therefore, good sleep is not only important for energy but also protects the brain and keeps it healthy.
